St. Mary’s members bake and buy cookies in preparation for the weekend, sign up to be prayer partners for the participants, and write encouraging notes to the residents.  Children in the church have become involved by decorating cards to be included in Agape bags.  We have had 3 cookie bakes to prepare some of the massive numbers needed.   Church members have been on the Kairos team and attended the Closing Ceremony at Broad River Correctional.

We always welcome volunteers.  This is an opportunity to follow Christ’s teachings as noted in Matthew 25:40 “The King will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.’”

The Kairos Prison Ministry is a short course in Christianity (similar to Cursillo) which begins with a 3 ½ day weekend at Broad River Correctional Institution and ends with the rest of one’s life.  The focus is on individual choices, relationships with God and the prison community, and on forgiveness.

St. Mary’s has served 13 times as the base camp for the team of 50 volunteers since becoming an important supporter of the program in April of 2010.  Team members meet in the parish hall each April and October to organize, pack 6000 dozen cookies, prepare prayer wheels, pray, sing, and cook lunches and dinners for all involved.  Each retreat serves 36-42 inmates.
