The ushers at St. Mary’s are volunteers from the congregation, who have a brief period of instruction, are placed on a rotating roster and are invited to serve periodically. Ushering is one more way one can become involved as a minister at St. Mary’s.
Ushers are useful before and during services to distribute service bulletins and to help seat people efficiently and comfortably, but they serve other functions as well. At St. Mary’s we use the passing of the offering plates as an opportunity to share our gratitude to God with His church, and the ushers take the gathered contributions to the altar along with the bread and wine as part of the “oblations.”
The ushers also help with the procession of the congregation to the altar rail to receive the Eucharist, or Holy Communion, and their return to their seats.
